Winfield, Kansas and Cowley County are the home of many unusual and entertaining special events and festivals. From simple activities like Friday night summer band concerts out on the grass pavilion (a 110 year tradition) and weekly Farmer’s Markets to the world famous Bluegrass Festival that brings 12,000 people to town, there are a wide variety of events that keep the town busy.   • Kanza Days: The first weekend in May. unique celebration of history, with historical re-enactments and period costumes. The weekend is capped off by a Chuck Wagon Supper … prepared 1800’s style by “cowboys and prairie women” over real campfires burning next to real covered wagons. Chuck Wagon crews come from several states to compete for the honor of best chuck wagon chef and for the prize of $6000! Wonderful food! A lively atmosphere! A great way to spend a weekend in the spring.

  • Winfield Country Round-Up Music Festival: It features a four day music festival with nationally known country artists, a Texas Hold-Em Tournament, and a Golf Tournament. A great event for the country music enthusiast which takes place in the late spring each year. www.winfieldcountryroundup.com

  • Cowley County Fair: The first weekend in August. A fun family activity with car races, a demolition derby, a rodeo, a variety of musical entertainment, and of course we can’t forget the fairgrounds with animals and amusement rides.

  • K&O Steam & Gas Engine Show: The third weekend in August. A 3-day show featuring antique gas and engine machinery. This is an unusual event that gives tribute to the farming and industrial machinery of days gone by.

  • Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival: The third weekend in September. This is by far the largest of all the special events that Winfield offers. Beginning on a Wednesday and continuing through Sunday, this event offers continuous bluegrass music and activities. Winfield doubles its size during this festival!   • Black Dog Trail Festival: The last full weekend in September. This old fashioned small town fall festival is offered in nearby Dexter, only 15 minutes away. Activities include a ride on a hay wagon, “quick draw” contests, cowboy shoot-outs, a quilt show, a re-enactment of court justice of the 1800’ s, and old-timers telling stories. It is a simple and fun activity amidst autumn leaves & the golden fall sun.

  • Art In The Park Art Fair &”Fall Into Holidaze Craft & Antique Show”: The first Saturday in October. Art In The Park is located in beautiful Island Park, and is truly an art show, where fine painting, sculpture, and pottery are offered. The “Fall Into Holidaze Craft & Antique Show” is a craft & antique show at the fairgrounds. Vendors provide refreshments at both shows.

  • Quail Ridge Golf Course Winfield Couples Invitational: The first weekend in October. Two days of golf with cart and on-course beverages. A lunch, dinner & dance are offered on Saturday, and lunch & awards on Sunday. Special events each day. Call Quail Ridge Golf Course (620-221-5645) or go to

  • Outhouse Tour & Festival: The Saturday before Thanksgiving. This is a unique festival offered by Elk Falls… the “world’s largest living ghost town in the heart of the Kansas Ozarks”. Elk Falls is a little over an hour away, and the drive alone is worth the effort! This is truly one of the most beautiful drives in all of Kansas. Once you arrive in Elk Falls, you will laugh your way through the Outhouse Tour as all 1800 residents of the town try to outdo one another in designing and creating “theme outhouses”! It is guaranteed to be a memorable experience.

  • Isle of Lights: Offered November 20-December 30. Soft Christmas music plays as you drive quietly through a mile long Christmas light dislay lit by hundreds of thousands of bright twinkling lights. This features well known, beloved settings like Toyland, Zooland, Reindeer Road, a nativity scene and Oz.
